and Social Change
Therapeutic theatre is a form of drama therapy that uses theatrical performance as a method of therapy. The participants' lived experiences, challenges and oppressions are processed within the workshops, rehearsals, and the performance itself for their healing and well-being.
Post-performance questionnaires and the open discussion with the audience of stakeholders are a catalyst for social change. Here is where an exchange of dialogue is designed to evoke new ideas. People can freely exchange ideas without coercion or manipulation - just bringing sincere curiosity, compassion, and an intention for positive social change.
Therapeutic Theatre for Healing and Social Change is modeled after the method ethnodramatherapy which incorporates research, therapy, theatre art, and social change.
Instead of only talk therapy, participants process their lived experiences, oppression, and daily challenges through group drama therapy workshops (includes experiential exercises and somatic grounding, finding and strengthening voices)
Instead of delivering the data gathered from interviews and experiential exercises by a research report, the essence of a people/group, the shared and validated lived experiences of the participants are delivered through a therapeutic performance.
Instead of just a conversation, participants share their stories by expressing their authentic selves through theatre art.
Instead of just watching a performance and leaving, the audience and the participants/storytellers have the opportunity to share thoughts, become better acquainted, discuss concerns, and exchange ideas for social change.
The performance delivers the message of the participants in a compassionate, authentic, true, vulnerable, and direct way. It is their way of connecting, of healing, emancipation, and bringing a community together. It is to create a new, reimagined community culture.
Connect with your community in a healthy, creatively expressive, action-oriented, responsible, and exciting way that supports who you are, what you have to say, and moves humanity forward.
